About the project

// 4 min read

Every traveler owns two artifacts: a passport full of stamps and a camera roll full of photos. Neither shows the whole picture, and neither helps you find the people who walked the same roads. NomadMap is our answer — and our first fully in-house consumer product: a social network built around a world map. Tap the countries you've been to, watch your map fill with color, mark where you're going next — then let the map introduce you to travelers who match it. The tagline carries the origin story too: for nomads, by nomads, built in the land of the original nomads.

NomadMap Gold theme — leather-atlas world map of Europe and Africa with visited countries picked out in bronze-stamped panels, a 15-country counter, and the bottom navigation
01Gold theme — the world as a leather atlas, visited countries stamped in bronze
NomadMap Paper theme — warm ivory travel-journal map of the Americas with visited countries filled in sage green and a 19-country counter
02Paper theme — a travel journal in warm ivory; each theme ships its own app icon

The map is a custom SVG engine — Robinson projection, per-country hit-testing, theme-aware fills and glows — wrapped in three hand-crafted looks: Paper (a warm travel journal), Gold (a leather atlas with bronze stamps) and Neon (deep space with glowing city lights). Switching themes swaps the launcher icon along with the interface, on both platforms. The map isn't a screen in the app; it is the app — everything else hangs off it.

NomadMap Neon theme — a dark world map with visited countries glowing teal and sparkling city lights across Asia, and the Paper / Gold / Neon theme switcher
03Neon theme — deep space, glowing borders and city sparkles; the theme switcher lives on the map
NomadMap profile — Travel DNA card reading ‘Culture Seeker’ with Art & culture, History and Food traits, and a ‘You'll probably love’ list recommending S. Korea, Argentina, Colombia, Slovenia and India with 95–97% match scores, plus a ‘Surprise me’ trip picker
04Travel DNA — the map read as a personality, with country recommendations scored against your taste

The social layer starts from a simple claim: your map says more about you than your bio. The Travel DNA engine reads the countries you've visited and how you've rated your "chemistry" with them, assigns you a traveler profile — Culture Seeker, and friends — and computes a compatibility percentage against every other user. Discover surfaces travelers whose maps resemble yours and people planning the same country in the same month; a 97% match is an introduction, not a swipe.

NomadMap chat on a passport-stamp background — ‘Break the ice’ suggestion chips reading ‘You've both been to France — how was it?’ and ‘Ask about their trip to Kazakhstan’, above a drafted message asking for Kazakhstan recommendations
05Chat — icebreakers generated from what the two travelers actually share
NomadMap achievements grid — engraved medallion badges including Between Worlds, The Pathfinder, Continental Soul, Old World Traveler and The Wanderer, each with progress like 10/10 and 22/25
0657 achievements — regions, continents and milestones as engraved medallions

Conversations open warm, not cold. The chat seeds every new dialog with icebreakers built from the overlap of the two maps — "You've both been to France — how was it?" — over a passport-stamp backdrop, with photos, reactions, replies and presence. Around the core: country-pinned posts and tips, photo albums, private notes per country, and 57 achievements rendered as engraved medallions, from "visit 10 countries" to full-continent sweeps.

NomadMap profile — Africa and Morocco photo album cards, a Visited (22) chip list with country flags from Australia to Kyrgyzstan, a Planning (9) counter and an achievements rail
07Profile — albums, 22 visited countries as flag chips, planning list and achievement rail

The build itself is the second story. NomadMap was developed with AI as a co-author: the screens, the map engine, the matching math, the moderation flows, the server functions and the store listings in 11 languages all came out of an AI-driven workflow, with the studio acting as architect, product designer and reviewer. The backend is fully serverless (Firebase: auth, real-time database, storage, push), so the product runs at near-zero cost until real usage arrives — the right economics for an in-house bet. The app ships in 13 languages and is live on both global stores.
